First Lady joins World Children's Day celebrations

First Lady Sajidha Mohamed participated in the opening ceremony of the children's festival on Ukulhas, Alifu Alifu Atoll commemorating World Children's Day. The event, organised by UNICEF Maldives in collaboration with the Maldives Police Service, marked one of the series of activities dedicated to celebrating children worldwide.

Inaugurated by the First Lady and Minister of Sports, Fitness and Recreation, Abdulla Rafiu, the festival, held in collaboration with the Ukulhas Council, government agencies, and NGOs on Ukulhas Island, featured stalls from the police, the children's ombudsman's office, and various government offices and institutions. Prior to the festival's commencement, the First Lady unveiled the World Children's Day billboard.

Addressing the attendees, the First Lady highlighted the importance of hosting child-focused events and drew attention to the pervasive issue of bullying faced by children. She urged teachers, parents, and stakeholders to be vigilant and collaborative in addressing this concern, emphasizing the role of those in positions of authority and trust in preventing bullying.

A moment of silence was observed during the event to honor the suffering of Palestinian children. The First Lady also visited the festival stalls and interacted with the children of Ukulhas Island, engaging in the festivities.

The Children's Day celebrations aim to raise awareness about child abuse, fostering a safe environment for children in the Maldives. The objectives include encouraging all segments of society to stand against child abuse and providing children with a secure and joyful living environment within their families.

This year, the Maldives Police Service and (United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund) UNICEF Maldives jointly commemorate World Children's Day with a series of events scheduled between December 12 and December 21 on Ukulhas and Alifu Alifu Atoll. Activities include children's art exhibitions, child-safe tourism initiatives, island cleanup, fun runs, and sea sports. World Children's Day is annually celebrated on November 20.
