President vows to enact measures to foster public virtue

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has vowed to uphold Islamic principles and enact measures to foster public virtue.

Speaking at the Huravee Day function, President Muizzu announced the administration's decision to block all access to websites that display sexually explicit content. He acknowledged that despite the legal and religious prohibitions in place within the Maldives, access to certain internet content remained available. He emphasised that it is entrusted upon leadership to enforce these prohibitions per the tenets of Islamic faith.

As such, President Muizzu highlighted the findings of research studies which suggest that exposure to sexually explicit content can negatively impact an individual's cognitive abilities, induce restlessness, and hinder productivity. He noted that such behaviours are not only prohibited by Islam and laws but also pose a significant existential threat to the nation and humanity overall.

In light of these considerations, President Muizzu reaffirmed the administration's commitment to uphold Islamic principles and announced forthcoming measures to restrict access to such content. Highlighting that the administration has already taken steps to block access to websites that display sexually explicit content, He said that all such websites would be blocked within the following week.

Additionally, President Muizzu called on the public to perform the five daily prayers on time and to prevent the Fajr prayer congregations from dwindling. He said that his administration is committed to promoting and achieving victory for the Islamic faith and its morals and reiterated his wishes for all Maldivians to follow the sacred precepts of Islam. He added that more people turning to congregational prayer would increase the country’s blessings, joy and collective strength.
