The Maldives has announced the resumption of the recruitment of unskilled labour from Bangladesh.
In an announcement, the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology stated that unskilled labourers from Bangladesh will be permitted to enter the Maldives starting from December 17. The ministry has specified that there is currently a temporary suspension of unskilled labour from other countries.
Additionally, the ministry stated that the documents that have been uploaded to the expatriate management system, Xpat, will undergo processing. The government has implemented the arrangement, with no additional details provided in the announcement.
The decision to resume recruitment follows the temporary suspension imposed by the previous administration on unskilled labour from Bangladesh. The suspension was made after the number of Bangladeshi labourers in the Maldives surpassed 100,000. Presently, statistics indicate that there are more than 130,000 Bangladeshi labourers currently working in the Maldives.
