The Maldives Customs Service has stated that goods containers are now required to be unloaded at the sites instead of the Male' Commercial Harbour.
At a press conference, Commissioner General of Customs Yoosuf Maniu said Customs currently clear container goods imported from abroad directly from the port. However, Customs has decided to change the rule to unload the containers at the relevant site to make it as convenient as possible for businesses. He added that Customs officers will visit the site when the containers are being unloaded.
As such, Maniu said the decision was taken to expedite the unloading process and to address the space constraints faced by the commercial port. He expressed confidence that the new rule will speed up the clearing of goods by small businesses and reduce charges over damages. He also said the clearance process will be recorded with a digital system, eliminating the need for paperwork.
Also at the press conference, Chief Superintendent of Customs Ismail Hamdhoon said they will allow containers to be cleared at sites for businesses that are recorded as having submitted valid and correct documents for the past five years. He noted that Customs has profiled businesspeople in a risk management system. He added that the changes to the process of clearing goods will benefit business owners and resorts.
The new rule is expected to ease the convenience of clearing goods and prevent damages. Currently, businesses complain of the space constraints at the Male' Commercial Harbour, which result in delays in clearing goods and damages to goods. Meanwhile, an international port is being developed in Gulhifalhu to solve the issues at the Male' port.
