The Male' City Council has stated that the market will be developed with a seven-floor building and a parking area.
Speaking to PSM News, Acting Mayor Ahmed Nareesh said that all the administrative arrangements have been completed to bring all the markets in Male' City under one roof. He highlighted the council was previously unable to begin the project as the previous government rejected the land use plan 19 times.
Additionally, Acting Mayor Nareesh detailed that the parking area will be in the basement and the fish market will be on the ground floor. In addition, the vegetable market, and a market with a cold storage facility and a food court will be on the upper floors.
Furthermore, Nareesh said he expects the stalls to be relocated to the temporary market in the next seven weeks. After which, the new market will be built and open within eight months after construction. He said that the floors will be handed over to the council as soon as they are completed and that the fish market will be opened first.
Moreover, Nareesh said the seven-floor market building will be built on 15,000sqft of land, which will solve the space constraints at the current market. The market is designed to meet international standards and the Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) guidelines. He also said that bringing all the markets in Male' City under one roof was the plan of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu when he served as Mayor.
