MPS to rehabilitate minors in gangs with Juvenile Justice

The Maldives Police Service (MPS) is holding discussions to begun rehabilitating minors in criminal groups with the Department of Juvenile Justice.

At a press conference, Commissioner of Police Ali Shujau noted the persistent threat posed by criminal groups in cities across the country, stressing the urgent need for comprehensive measures to eradicate drug-related activities and gangs from communities. He highlighted the recruitment of children under the age of 18 by these criminal groups and affirmed the police force's readiness to take decisive action against gang leaders and undertake necessary steps to rehabilitate minors involved in such activities.

As such, Commissioner Shujau said the police service will target criminal groups and identify and apprehend minors for rehabilitation under the supervision of the Department of Juvenile Justice. He also said he would consult with the relevant authorities to make the necessary legal changes to prevent such incidents. He admitted that despite efforts, the police have not attained the desired outcome in combating drug trafficking.

However, Commissioner Shujau said the new administration will bring results to citizens by coordinating law enforcement efforts under the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology. As a result, he said the police service will be better able to work with Customs to prevent drug trafficking and also apprehend and handover drug users in the atolls to the National Drug Authority (NDA).

Additionally, Commissioner Shujau said the police service will track down the leaders and beneficiaries of drug smuggling networks and will also focus on identifying liveaboards smuggling liquor into residential areas. He added that he will pay special attention to incidents conflicting with Islamic principles, citing plans to close spas engaged in objectionable activities. He emphasised that action will be taken against individuals running such businesses and those profiting from them.
