Gov't seeks instructors to train divers for fishing vessels

The Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources is seeking dive instructors as consultants for a government programme to train rescue divers for fishing vessels.

The ministry plans to hire dive instructors to commence a programme to ensure that at least one crew member on each fishing vessel is certified as a rescue diver to reduce incidents at sea while diving. Under the programme, the ministry will begin rescue diver courses in three regions of the country. The first phase will target the southern atolls of Laamu Atoll, Gaafu Alifu Atoll, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll and Addu City. The programme is for Maldivian crew members of vessels that have obtained fishing licenses and are engaged in diving and net fishing.

Individuals who submit proposals as consultants for the programme must be a diving instructor with a scuba diver license and a license to teach a diving course. They must also have completed the diving instructor course two years ago and have instructed 10 individuals in a dive training course (open water or higher level) and instructed at least one person in a rescue diver level course.

Individuals who are hired as a consultant will receive USD2,300 for each person they train as a rescue diver under the programme. The payment will be made after the participants complete the course and receive their certificate.

Additional information will be available at the ministry on January 4 at 1100hrs and the deadline for submission of proposals is January 9 at 1100hrs. The ministry expects the rescue diver training programme to greatly reduce the number of incidents at sea involving fishing vessels.
