The government, through the National Health Scheme, Aasandha, has introduced biannual medical checkups twice a year, as pledged by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. This initiative aims to provide free medical check-ups to the people of the Maldives, emphasising early detection and treatment of major diseases.
During a press conference, Heena Waleed, CEO of the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA), highlighted the programme's objectives, focusing on early disease detection, promoting healthy living, and fostering a generation knowledgeable about disease prevention.
Aminath Zeeniya, Managing Director of Aasandha, affirmed that the medical checkup service, developed in collaboration with healthcare professionals, will commence on January 1 for individuals aged 50 and above. The service will extend to those aged 35 to 49 and children under 19 from April 1, 2024, and individuals aged 19 to 34 from July 1, 2024.
After the initial check-up, individuals recommended for a second check-up by their doctors can avail the service six months later during the year. The packages are tailored to identify non-communicable or major diseases requiring long-term treatment, subject to professional guidance and periodic reviews.
The service is accessible at health centers in islands, regional hospitals, Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), Hulhumale' Hospital, and Villimale Hospital. Interested individuals can register for a medical checkup by contacting the respective healthcare facilities.
