Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has stated that bunkering services will begin at the Addu Regional Port within the next three months.
Speaking to PSM News, CEO of MPL Mohamed Wajeeh Ibrahim highlighted the lack of development at Addu Regional Port and Kulhudhuffushi in the past 18 years. He said that the new administration aims to bring the necessary changes to the two ports and develop them to a modern level.
Additionally, Wajeeh said the residents of Addu City are extremely disappointed with the port. He clarified that if the port equipment is damaged, it would have to be transported to Male', as the Addu port is incapable of operating self-sufficiently. Therefore, he said the aim is to further develop the port and facilitate revenue generation, which is why MPL has decided to begin and expand bunkering services.
As such, Wajeeh said that starting bunkering services would increase revenue and result in more employees being hired. He also cited a study identifying Addu region as a potential fishing port and said that MPL is interested in the initiative and has held discussions with the Maldives Fisheries Company (MIFCO).
