HPA to begin nationwide filariasis screening campaign

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has announced its decision to initiate a nationwide screening campaign for filariasis, scheduled to commence next week. The campaign comes in response to the detection of additional cases of filariasis in the Maldives, prompting the agency to ensure a comprehensive assessment of the prevalence of the disease.

HPA stated that the campaign will commence with sample collections from Male' City and Hulhumale', extending subsequently to Vilimale', Gulhifalhu, and Thilafushi. The agency set a target of testing a minimum of 70 random samples daily, with screening open to both locals and expatriates. Specific age groups will be designated for participation in the screening process.

The initial cases of filariasis were identified during an expatriate health screening programme held in Kulhudhuffushi City on December 14. Subsequent cases among expatriate workers have raised concerns, with the current number of 32 infected individuals all being expatriate workers.

The government has mandated medical check-ups for expatriate workers upon entry into the Maldives in an effort to curtail the spread of infectious diseases. The government has also assured the availability of kits and medicines for filariasis testing, with ongoing efforts to procure additional supplies for comprehensive screening and management.
