PSM's mayoral debate to kick off tomorrow night

The eagerly anticipated PSM Male' City mayoral debate featuring candidates contesting January 13 election is set to take place tomorrow night, commencing at 2100hrs.

PSM mayoral debate is distinctive as it showcases all five candidates, marking a significant moment in the electoral history as it is the first time such a multitude of candidates are vying for the mayoral position.

Debates of this nature hold paramount importance during crucial elections, serving as a platform for candidates to articulate their visions to the electorate. The candidates, through this forum, have the opportunity to elucidate their plans for the people and the developmental and welfare aspects of the constituency.

In preparation for the mayoral debate, PSM will hold meetings with the candidates and share information on how the debate will be conducted. It also includes a lucky draw to determine the order in which candidates will be given the opportunity to speak.

Five candidates will be running for the mayoral seat. They are former Attorney General Azima Shakoor representing the ruling PPM/PNC coalition and former CEO of MTCC Adam Azim representing the main opposition MDP. Other candidates include incumbent City Councilor Mohamed Saif Fathih representing The Democrats as well as former Commissioner of Police Hussain Waheed and Shuaib Ali who are running as independent candidates.

Scheduled to kick off at 2100hrs tomorrow night, the debate will be preceded by a pre-show starting at 2030hrs. The entire event, including the debate and pre-show, will be broadcast live on TVM, PSM News, and Dhivehirajjeyge Adu, ensuring widespread access for the public to engage with the democratic process.

The position of Male’ City mayor became vacant after President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu resigned to assume office in November. Simultaneously, the three council seats became vacant as councilors resigned to take on roles in the new administration.
