Gov't launches drainage ditch cleanup programme to stop flooding

The government has launched a special drainage ditch cleanup programme to address the flooding issue in Male' City. The programme was inaugurated by the Minister of Cities, Local Government and Public Works Adam Shareef Umar.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Shareef highlighted the inadequate drainage system in Male' as a contributing factor to the flooding issue but assured the public that the government is prioritising solutions.

Additionally, Minister Shareef emphasised the importance of the cleanup programme, particularly in the aftermath of household damages caused by heavy rainfall on December 31, 2023. He underscored the collaborative efforts of Male' City Council, the Ministry of Health, the Health Protection Agency (HPA), and others in addressing flooding concerns for the overall safety and security of the community.

Meanwhile, Acting Mayor Ahmed Nareesh of Male' City Council revealed that the cleaning programme is scheduled to last for one week.

The joint venture involves the cooperation of the cities ministry, Male' City Council, the Ministry of Health, and the Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO). Although the special initiative targets the clearance of blocked drains for a limited period, the city council intends to continue regular drain maintenance beyond the designated week.
