Gov't officials suspended for derogatory posts about India

Government officials who posted derogatory remarks about neighboring India have been suspended.

The President's Office has officially confirmed this information to PSM News.

The Maldives government has affirmed its commitment to taking swift action against individuals on social media whose conduct undermines international relations. The statement comes in response to derogatory remarks circulating on social media platforms targeting foreign leaders and high-ranking individuals.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in an official statement, acknowledged that the government has become aware of certain foreign leaders and officials being treated disrespectfully on social media. However, the Ministry clarified that these expressions are the opinions and views of individuals and do not represent the official stance of the government.

Emphasising the importance of responsible freedom of expression, the government has urged the public not to engage in activities that breed hatred, incitement, or jeopardize Maldives' relations with other countries. The Maldivian government has made it clear that relevant authorities will not hesitate to take action against individuals responsible for making derogatory remarks.
