The government has announced plans to develop Keylakunu in Haa Dhaalu Atoll, as a major eco-tourism island. The initiative is part of a broader strategy to make protected areas economically beneficial.
Speaking at a press conference, Principal Secretary to the President on Public Policy Abdulla Nazim said that the government has outlined a plan to develop Keylakunu as an eco-tourism island. He said the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy and other relevant stakeholders are in discussions to develop the island in a manner that does not harm the natural beauty and marine life of the island. He also said that a key element of the project is the establishment of a modern visitor centre designed to educate tourists about the rich history and the surrounding environment of the island.
Furthermore, Nazim said that the Visitor Economic Council is evaluating the possibility of building floating rooms for visitors without damaging the coral reefs and lagoons. The newly formed Visitor Economic Council is chaired by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and co-chaired by Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed, along with Minister of Tourism Ibrahim Faisal.
The establishment of the Visitor Economic Council aligns with President Dr. Muizzu’s commitment to expanding the tourism sector. The mandate of the council extends to diversifying tourism offerings.
