Velana International Airport (VIA) has reported a record-breaking number of air traffic movements in a single day.
In a press release, the Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) stated that VIA recorded 925 air traffic movements, marking the highest number of airplane movements ever recorded in the history of the airport. This surpasses the previous record of 861 air traffic movements in a single day.
The breakdown of the new air traffic movements record is: 672 Seaplane Movements, 104 International Movements, 116 Domestic Movements, and 33 AD-HOC Movements. MACL stated that the contribution and support from both domestic and international airlines, as well as seaplane operators, have played a pivotal role in achieving this historic milestone.
Additionally, the 672 Air Traffic Movements from seaplanes on January 6, 2024, set a new record, surpassing the previous record of 659 seaplane movements on January 2, 2024. MACL highlighted that that every take-off and touchdown is considered an air traffic movement.
Regarding the new record, Deputy Managing Director of MACL Ibrahim Thoha expressed his gratitude, stating that the achievement is a testament to the collaborative efforts of all stakeholders involved. He extended thanks to the airlines and operators for their exceptional support in making this record-breaking day possible.
Furthermore, MACL stated that the achievement solidifies VIA’s position as a key player in the aviation industry. The expanding operations and services at VIA, facilitated by the operator, MACL, include strategic changes implemented to accommodate the winter peak season.
