Gov't to begin Male' and Villimale' road redevelopment this year

The government has announced plans to commence the redevelopment of roads in the capital Male' city and Villimale' this year.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu signed an agreement with the government of China to facilitate the development of roads in Male' and Villimale' during his state visit to China. The agreement was signed by Minister of Construction and Infrastructure Dr. Abdulla Muththalib on behalf of the Maldives.

The streets of Male' suffer from severe deterioration due to a lack of maintenance and the absence of proper drainage systems has led to flooding, causing damage to homes. As such, President Dr. Muizzu has said that all the roads in Male' will be transformed to to modern standards, incorporating effective drainage systems. The government plans to conduct surveys before initiating the project within the year, aiming for the completion of the roads in Male' and Villimale' within the next five years.

The project to develop the roads in Male' include the integration of water supply and sewerage systems, electricity upgrades, stormwater management, and fire hydrants. The government estimates an expenditure exceeding USD100 million for the development of the roads in Male'.

In addition to the capital city, the government has extended its commitment to the redevelopment of the roads in Villimale'. As such, the Road Development Corporation (RDC) has been tasked with conducting a study for the development of 5.6km of road in Villimale'.
