Passenger terminal development begins for GIA project

Addu International Airport Private Limited (AIA) has announced that preparations are underway to commence the passenger terminal development for the Gan International Airport (GIA) project.

The development of GIA commenced in June 2023, following the agreement signing between India-based Renaatus Projects Private Limited and AIA in March 2023. The site mobilisation has been successfully completed, with construction equipment now present on the site.

The scope of the project includes the construction of the Air Traffic Control Tower (ATC), fire station, and administration building. AIA stated that foundation works have been finalised and the installation of columns is currently in progress. The company is preparing to initiate the development of the passenger terminal in February, equipped with modern facilities capable of accommodating 1.5 million passengers annually. In addition, the expansion will include cargo facilities, featuring a cold storage area to serve businesses and the tourism sector.

AIA stated that significant progress has been made in the jetty expansion, with the completion of most of the expansion work. The company also stated that construction has commenced for a new parking zone, following the demolition of buildings in the area. The entire project is slated for completion by March 2025.

The development of GIA is being carried out under the line of credit of the Exim Bank of India. The development of the airport is expected to assist in the development of Addu City. In addition, AIA is preparing to develop two city hotels in Gan, which will boost the economy of the southern region of the Maldives and benefit businesses and residents.
