No reason for discontent over Maldives-China relations: Gov't

Minister of Foreign Affairs Moosa Zameer has expressed his belief that no other country should be dissatisfied with the Maldives for strengthening relations with China. He made the remark in an interview with PSM News during President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's state visit to China.

In the interview, Minister Zameer addressed the speculations put forth by local and international media outlets over President Muizzu's visit. He reiterated the administration's Pro-Maldives foreign policy that prioritises the interests of Maldivians, adding that the policy compels the government to strengthen relations with nations that respect the rights of Maldivians and avoid those who do not. As such, he said he sees no reason why any other country should be dissatisfied with the Maldives' friendship with China, as the relationship will benefit and improve the lives of citizens.

Additionally, Minister Zameer said the government will establish relations with all interested parties and will accept nations that speak out in support of issues that are favourable to the Maldives. He added that the foreign policy will be implemented in a way that protects the country's independence and sovereignty.

In a joint press statement during President Muizzu's visit, China stated that it firmly supports the Maldives in upholding its national sovereignty, independence and national dignity. China stated that it respects and supports the Maldives' exploration of a development path that suits its national conditions and opposes external interference in the internal affairs of the Maldives.
