Voting begins for Male' mayoral by-election

Voting has begun for the Male' City Mayoral by-election.

Simultaneously, by-elections are being conducted to elect three councillors in the Male' City Council and a by-election is taking place for a member of the women's development committee (WDC) in Mulah, Meemu Atoll.

The voting period, originally scheduled from 0800-1600hrs on January 13, has been extended to 1700hrs by the Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) due to adverse weather conditions across the country.

A total of 54,680 eligible individuals have the opportunity to cast their votes in the mayoral by-election. Candidates are encouraging the public to participate in the voting process, despite challenging weather conditions.

The Male' City mayor position became vacant when former Mayor, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, assumed the role of President on November 17 last year.
