HPA reports 19 cases of influenza

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has reported 19 cases of influenza this year.

HPA stated that the number of confirmed influenza cases this year has shown an increase compared to the figures recorded in November and December of the previous year. The agency noted an increase in both influenza and COVID-19 cases across neighboring countries as well. The spread of influenza is on the rise in the Maldives due to heightened travel activity during the school holidays.

Influenza is a contagious respiratory disease and increases seasonally. The most prevalent influenza strains are H1N1, H3N2, and influenza B. The HPA identified 19 individuals who tested positive for influenza this year, comprising 10 H3N2 cases, eight H1N1 cases, and one case of influenza B.

A total of 24 individuals have tested positive for influenza last year, with nine H3N2 and 10 H1N1 cases reported in November. In the same month, five individuals tested positive for influenza B. December saw an increase with seven H3N2 cases and 14 H1N1 cases, along with three cases of influenza B. Notably, the number of influenza cases has increased, resulting in one H1N1-related death and currently, three individuals are undergoing treatment with ventilators.

HPA emphasised the importance of vaccination for the protection against both influenza and COVID-19, especially for vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and those with chronic illnesses. The agency has also urged the public to avoid public spaces, limit contact with sick individuals, and maintain good hygiene practices to prevent the spread of the disease. Symptoms of influenza include a sore throat, cough, runny nose, headache, body aches, and, in some cases, diarrhea. Individuals experiencing a persistent cough lasting more than three days are advised to seek medical attention immediately.
