The government has launched a programme to train rescue divers for fishing vessels.
The programme is part of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's pledge to have a rescue diver on every fishing vessel. The programme is also included in the government's 14-week roadmap. The programme was inaugurated by Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim in Madaveli, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Thoriq highlighted the challenges facing fishermen engaged in net fishing, resulting in fishermen scuba diving during net fishing. He expressed confidence that the programme will mitigate the risks of scuba diving.
Also at the ceremony, Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources Ahmed Shiyam said the biggest challenge facing the fishermen so far is the lack of revenue. He also said that the fishing industry itself is facing various challenges but assured the fishermen that he will fulfill the pledges made by President Muizzu. He also said that the programme is an important initiative to ensure the safety of the fishermen.
At the ceremony, the fisheries ministry signed agreements with the authorities chosen to train rescue divers. A total of six parties have agreed to conduct the training.
The programme aims to ensure that at least one crew member on each fishing vessel is certified as a rescue diver to reduce incidents at sea while diving. The first phase of the programme involves training 50 fishermen. During the programme, experienced instructors will train participants in open water diving, advanced level diving and first aid. Those who complete the programme will be taught the skills needed to provide emergency assistance during diving and other incidents at sea.
