Voter turnout shows declining interest in democracy: ECM

The Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) has expressed concern over the declining voter turnout in past elections, interpreting it as a sign of waning interest in democracy among the public.

Speaking to PSM News, President of ECM Fuad Thaufeeq emphasised the need for the administration to address the decline in the voter turnout. He highlighted the commission's commitment to reversing the trend and increasing voter participation. He noted the upcoming parliamentary elections in March, coinciding with the month of Ramadan, and mentioned plans to consult a parliamentary committee next week to determine the optimal timing for voting.

Additionally, Fuad outlined the commission's efforts to provide support to voters, aiming to minimise waiting times at polling stations. He emphasised the commission's dedication to heightening awareness by disseminating information about the elections.

ECM has also decided to increase the number of polling stations to alleviate potential queues during the parliamentary elections. The total count will reach 600 nationwide, with around 200 stationed in the Greater Male' Region. Each polling station is designed to accommodate a maximum of 600 voters, ensuring a smoother voting process during this critical period.
