Gov't formulates rules for employment of disabled

The Ministry of Social and Family Development has formulated regulations concerning employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities. The ministry stated that the regulations are formulated to facilitate and ensure that persons with disabilities have the same employment rights and equal opportunities in the workplace as their counterparts.

The objectives of the regulations encompass providing individuals with disabilities equal opportunities in the workplace, allowing them to engage in the employment of their choice on par with others. The regulations aim to proscribe discrimination against persons with disabilities in both employment and the workplace based on their disability. Furthermore, the regulations seek to establish guidelines for employers of individuals with disabilities, mandating the provision of an appropriate working environment and active inclusion of these individuals in the workplace.

Additionally, employers are obligated to create a conducive environment within the workplace, eradicating discrimination against persons with disabilities. The regulations advocate for equal treatment of persons with disabilities concerning employment, education, training opportunities, promotion, and benefits, placing a requirement for employers of individuals with disabilities to appoint at least two disability liaison officers.

The ministry, responsible for implementing these regulations, is not exempt from compliance. It is tasked with developing standards for the disclosure of information on employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities, as well as standards for employers. The ministry has also announced the formation of a special committee for the employment of persons with disabilities, and a registration process for persons with disabilities is in the pipeline.

The regulations are scheduled to take effect one month after their publication in the Government Gazette.
