ECM seeks 7,000 officials for parliamentary election

The Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) has stated that 7,000 officials are needed for the parliamentary election.

ECM has announced the recruitment of officials for the parliamentary election. Those who wish to become officials should apply through the ECM portal. The electoral body will be choosing applicants between the ages of 18 and 65 and not holding a senior position in any political party.

Other requirements include the applicant not be actively involved in the campaign activities of any candidate, not be a family member of a candidate for the constituency where the application form is submitted. They are also required to have the necessary education and experience required to perform the responsibilities of an official, be medically fit, not be serving a criminal sentence and not be a school student.

ECM has decided to pay a Ramadan allowance to officials in addition to their salaries as the parliamentary elections coincide with the month of Ramadan. As such, they will receive USD32 as Ramadan allowance in addition to the salary, which ranges between USD65-172 depending on their position. If the ECM does not provide food, each official will be paid USD16 for breaking fast and breakfast and USD7 for Taraweeh.

ECM will be accepting applications until March 5 at 1500hrs and the training programmes will begin on February 24. ECM has scheduled the parliamentary election for March 17, during the month of Ramadan, as there would have been administrative challenges if the election was scheduled for a later date.
