The government has revealed that it has commenced efforts to decrease the fees charged by waste transfer stations operated by Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO).
During a press conference, Principal Secretary to the President Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim announced that a proposal has been presented to the Economic Council with the aim of reducing the charges imposed by waste transfer stations. He revealed that the Cabinet has deliberated on the proposal submitted by the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy, in collaboration with WAMCO, to reassess the existing fees. He said the relevant authorities have been instructed to identify a method to achieve the reduction in costs and submit it to the Economic Council.
Presently, waste transfer stations charge USD69 per tonne. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu had pledged to decrease the fee in his presidential campaign.
