Foundation stone laid for new Hulhumale' Prison unit

The Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) has announced the laying of the foundation stone for a 40-person holding unit in Hulhumale' Prison. Commissioner of Prisons Hassan Zareer officiated the ceremony, marking the development of the new unit.

MCS stated that the establishment of the holding unit at Hulhumale' Prison aims to enhance inmate services and living conditions. In addition, it serves the purpose of providing temporary accommodation for prisoners and detainees transported to Male' City for various reasons until their return to the prisons. Previously, transit prisoners and detainees were kept in Male' Prison, which closed on January 7.

In addition to the initial 40-seat holding unit, the facility is slated for future expansion to accommodate 77 inmates. The construction of the holding unit is expected to be completed within the next four months.
