Hoarafushi Juvenile Justice Unit completed

Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has completed the Juvenile Justice Unit in Hoarafushi, Haa Alifu Atoll.

The scope of the project included, ground works, concrete works, masonry and plastering, roofing and ceiling, doors and windows. It also included, finishing works, mechanical works, electrical and plumbing, installation of a fire fighting system. The value of the project is USD390,000.

The development of the Juvenile Justice Unit in Hoarafushi was contracted to MTCC in October 2022. The Juvenile Justice Unit has been developed as a halfway house to provide rehabilitation and treatment for juveniles apprehended over various crimes. MTCC stated the halfway house in Hoarafushi is the the first of its kind to be developed in the Maldives. The facility has been developed on a 10,000sqft plot of land.

The Juvenile Justice Act was passed by the Parliament of the Maldives on November 14, 2019, and ratified by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on November 20, 2019. A juvenile detention centre in Asseyri Prison in Himmafushi, Kaafu Atoll, was opened in 2022 under the act to provide rehabilitation for juvenile offenders.
