Ministry of Islamic Affairs has launched the Zakat House website. The website serves as a platform through which the public can access the updates on the ongoing endeavors of the Maldives Zakat House.
Sheikh Mohamed Latheef, the Head Imaan of the Islamic Centre, launched the website at a ceremony held at the Ministry of Islamic Affairs. The ministry stated that the occasion symbolizes a significant step towards enhancing transparency and accessibility in sharing information related to the Zakat House.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr. Shaheem Ali Saeed said that one of the most important purposes of the website is to bring all work related to Zakat closer to the public. He said the website will also provide information on the work related to the Zakat Fund.
As such, Minister Shaheem said the aim of launching the website is to show the historic Zakat-related work done in the Maldives as well as the initiatives of the Islamic ministry. He added that those who have written books and research papers related to Zakat can donate their work to the ministry for publication on the website.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu constituted the Maldives Zakat House under the Ministry of Islamic Affairs in December 2023. The Maldives Zakat House is mandated to fortify the Maldivian Zakat system and do all necessary work to expand the Zakat Fund by investing in areas where Shariah has approved Zakat, thereby maximising distributor benefits.
The Maldives Zakat House aims to provide a mechanism for accepting and disbursing Zakat, announce the Nisab for Zakat Al-Mal, or Zakat on Wealth, twice a year, and regularly update the national registry of individuals below the poverty line.
