Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed has revealed the government's goal of completing the training for all imams within the year. He made the announcement during the inauguration ceremony of the Imam training programme, which was initiated by the Head Imam of the Islamic Centre, Sheikh Mohamed Latheef.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Shaheem revealed that 77 imams are set to participate in the first round of the programme, emphasising that it will offer a significantly more comprehensive curriculum compared to foundation and diploma courses. He said that the primary objective of the programme is to cultivate academically proficient and capable imams, with the aim of completing the training for all imams within the year.
Additionally, Minister Shaheem disclosed plans to send imams abroad for training, offering scholarships for those interested in pursuing master's and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees. As such, he said that imams will undergo training at universities in various countries, including Malaysia, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Brunei, Morocco, and Indonesia.
The imam training programme aims to train imams in 11 regions across the nation, providing additional training in the field over a four-day period. The curriculum, developed under the direct guidance of Minister Shaheem, covers nine subjects. The programme is scheduled to commence on February 10 in Gemanafushi, Gaafu Alifu Atoll.
The focus of the programme is on delivering intensive training to imams in their field and enhancing their knowledge about mosques, with the goal of building their skills to better fulfill their responsibilities.
