President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has delivered his inaugural Presidential Address, mandated by Article 84 of the Maldivian Constitution. In his first address, he outlined the government's policies, including efforts to recover lost sovereign territory in compliance with international law.
President Muizzu emphasised strengthening the national defence force, drawing parallels with historical figures like Bodurasgefaanu. He highlighted initiatives to enhance military capabilities for 24/7 surveillance of the Exclusive Economic Zone.
The President's commitment to prioritising the welfare of the people under the principle of “Pro Maldives” was outspoken. Attention to nationalism included re-establishing the National Council on Mosques, increasing expenditure on mosque maintenance, and providing opportunities for Hajj.
Further, to combat youth brainwashing and preserve Maldivian identity, a special ministry was created. The Dhivehi National Heritage Research Centre was established to research and educate on Maldivian nationalism.
The President announced Maldivian Nationalism as a separate subject in the national curriculum and reintroduced the custom of starting school assemblies with the national anthem. A roadmap for the first 14 weeks detailed 161 pledges, with 50 already fulfilled, and collaboration with UNDP for a five-year strategic action plan.
Addressing the housing crisis, the President pledged to ensure every Maldivian has access to adequate housing within the five-year term. The RasMale' project aims to offer permanent housing, meeting international standards, and designated as a "Net Zero Carbon Eco City." The plan includes land reclamation, road construction, and essential services in various regions.
