A Maldivian President to make historic debut at World Governments Summit

In the ever-evolving landscape of international relations, enduring partnerships stand as pillars of progress and prosperity. Among these, the alliance between the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the Maldives emerges as a beacon of cooperation, spanning four and a half decades of political collaboration since March 15, 1978.

The longstanding bond has seen remarkable growth under the presidency of Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, marking a period of intensified engagement and mutual benefit. Notably, Dr. Muizzu's pre-inauguration visit to the UAE, organised by a special invitation from the Emirati government, set a precedent for collaboration. Arriving on a specially arranged flight, his visit heralded significant economic gains for the Maldives, including the securing of USD80 million in grants earmarked for the development of Velana International Airport (VIA), a vital infrastructural asset.

Subsequent visits by President Dr. Muizzu reinforced the foundation of this strategic partnership. His participation in the 28th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP28) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) underscored shared commitments to sustainable development. During this summit, discussions with key figures such as Dr. Muhammad Al Jasser, President of the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), laid the groundwork for collaborative ventures aimed at bolstering small businesses and implementing vital socio-economic programs in the Maldives.

Third trip to UAE promises positive developments

Amidst these diplomatic overtures, President Dr. Muizzu's ongoing trip to the UAE assumes paramount significance. As he attends the prestigious World Government Summit 2024 in Dubai, he steps onto a global stage reserved for heads of state personally invited by the distinguished leadership of the UAE. It marks a historic moment for the Maldives, as it represents the first time a senior Maldivian official attends the summit, emblematic of the deepening ties between the two nations.

As President Dr. Muizzu's third visit to the UAE unfolds, it heralds a new chapter in bilateral relations, brimming with opportunities for development and fresh investments in the Maldives. In this era of dynamic global partnerships, the UAE-Maldives alliance stands as a testament to the transformative power of collaboration in shaping a brighter future for all.

Crucial summit to shape the future ahead

Under the theme "Shaping Future Governments," this year's summit delves into pressing global issues, from accelerating digital transformation to ensuring equitable economic growth amidst technological advancements. Discussions centered on artificial intelligence (AI), sustainable development, and education underscore the collective resolve to navigate the complexities of governance in an ever-changing world.

Beyond the summit's deliberations, President Dr. Muizzu's agenda encompasses crucial talks on healthcare cooperation, further solidifying the commitment of UAE to supporting the Maldives' well-being. As decisions regarding medical treatments for Maldivian citizens are deliberated, the visit promises to yield tangible benefits, reaffirming the role of the UAE as a steadfast ally in the Maldives' journey towards progress and prosperity.
