Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan has revealed that 111 establishments purportedly operating as salons and spas were uncovered as fronts for prostitution within the Greater Male' Region. He made the statement during a joint press conference involving various agencies under the ministry's scope.
Speaking at the conference, Minister Ihusaan provided updates on the ongoing efforts within the homeland security sector. Notably, he highlighted the repatriation of 183 illegal immigrants and the deportation of 83 individuals so far. He also underscored the identification of numerous illicit establishments posing as legitimate salons, affirming that decisive legal measures are being pursued against them.
Additionally, Minister Ihusaan emphasised the concerning trend of individuals being lured into prostitution under the guise of tourist visas, outlining the government's deportation policy for apprehended offenders. He underscored the connection to human trafficking, noting the presence of Bangladeshi nationals among those involved.
Furthermore, Minister Ihusaan outlined joint initiatives between the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade aimed at curbing illegal immigrant and foreigner involvement in business activities within the Maldives. He said that the goal is to close down such illicit businesses. In addition, he revealed that the Anti-Drugs Task Force, operating within the homeland security sector, has successfully confiscated narcotics and alcohol valued at USD 2.7 million so far.
