Gov't to train 56 rescue divers within February

The Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources has announced plans to train 56 individuals as rescue divers by the end of February, fulfilling President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's commitment to having a trained rescue diver on each fishing vessel.

The training initiatives commenced on January 19 in Madaveli, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, with eight participants completing the programme from the island. In addition, five individuals from Kolamaafushi and 14 from Dhaandhoo in Gaafu Alifu Atoll, have successfully finished their training

Speaking to PSM News, Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources Ahmed Shiyam expressed intentions to expand the programme nationwide next year, contingent upon budgetary allocations. He also emphasised the initial target number of trainees set for the first phase.

These training programmes are facilitated by diving experts, with the first round conducted for fishermen in Devvadhoo, Gaafu Alifu Atoll, involving seven participants from the island. Upcoming training is slated for Maradhoo in Addu City in February, with 11 fishermen expected to participate.

Government funding supports the training programme, ensuring one trained individual per boat. Originally targeting 50 trainees for the first round, the ministry has increased the number to 56 due to overwhelming response. The primary goal behind the government's initiative to have a rescue diver on every fishing vessel is to ensure preparedness for handling life-threatening situations and emergencies at sea.
