ECM re-registers compromised voters to maintain secrecy

The Elections Commission of the Maldives has opened re-registration for individuals whose vote secrecy has been compromised in the upcoming parliamentary election.

The ECM has provided a chance for re-registration and has issued a list of 4,651 individuals, which compromised the secrecy of their votes. Accordingly, the ECM has set a deadline of 1600hrs on February 15 to re-register those listed to safeguard the secrecy of their votes.

Re-registration forms can be submitted online through the ECM Portal. However, for those seeking to change their place of residence outside Male' City, applications must be submitted to local councils. Registration within Male' City will be facilitated at the Dharubaaruge convention centre.

The ECM has extended the opportunity for re-registration for voting in foreign countries, industrial sites, and resorts. However, due to insufficient registration, some places will not have ballot boxes. Therefore, re-registration remains open for individuals registered at such locations. Individuals failing to register at designated places for ballot boxes will be eligible to vote in their island of residence. Among foreign countries, only Sri Lanka and Malaysia have confirmed the establishment of polling stations.

The re-registration period was open from February 1-7. During this period, 13,378 individuals applied for re-registration, out of which 11,919 were successfully registered. The parliamentary election is scheduled for March 17, subject to approval of the Elections General Act Amendment Bill by the President.
