No-confidence motion against Aslam, Saleem withdrawn

The no-confidence motion submitted against Parliament Speaker Mohamed Aslam and Deputy Speaker Ahmed Saleem has been withdrawn, as revealed by Minority Leader of the Parliament and Parliamentarian Moosa Siraj on social media.

In a post on X, Siraj stated that he currently does not wish to pursue the matter further, informing the Parliament accordingly.

The initial no-confidence motions against Aslam and Saleem were put forth by the ruling coalition of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and the People's National Congress (PNC). Submitted to Parliament on January 28, the motion received support from 23 parliamentarians, including members from the ruling coalition, the Maldives Development Alliance (MDA), and private members.

The decision to submit the no-confidence motion against Aslam and Saleem was prompted by the release of a directive from the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) urging its members to withhold parliamentary approval for certain cabinet ministers. In addition, the motion accuses both Aslam and Saleem of prioritising their party's interests during cabinet approval sessions, contrary to their mandated responsibilities as stipulated by law and the Constitution.
