Zakat Fund spent over USD 26,000 in grants in January

The Ministry of Islamic Affairs has announced that the Zakat Fund spent over USD 26,000 solely in grants during January.

The latest statistics released by the Maldives Zakat House, a total of USD 28700 has been allocated from the Zakat Fund out of the scheduled USD 51700 for distribution. The primary allocation last month was directed towards medical assistance for the underprivileged, with the largest sum granted for cancer treatment, amounting to USD 13500. Additional disbursements included USD 4900 for transplants, USD 3800 for brain surgeries, USD 2760 for heart surgeries, and USD 28500 for other purposes.

The Islamic ministry said that 65 individuals have received aid through the Zakat Fund, while six others received assistance under special circumstances or emergencies, totaling USD 1070. In addition, USD 19000 was used for various religious programmes, and USD 11200 went towards employee salaries within the Zakat House.

The objective of the Maldives Zakat House is to facilitate the collection and distribution of Zakat, announce the Nisab for Zakat Al-Mal biannually, and regularly update the national registry of individuals below the poverty line.
