Maldives discusses justice enhancement with US, Australia

The Prosecutor General's Office (PGO) has held discussions with the United States (US) and Australia regarding the enhancement of the criminal justice system in the Maldives.

The discussions occurred through separate meetings with the respective high commissioners of both countries. Prosecutor General (PG) Hussain Shameem met with High Commissioner of the US to the Maldives Hugo Yon on February 3. He also held discussions with High Commissioner of Australia to the Maldives David Jessup on February 15.

The PGO reported that during the meetings, the ambassadors of both nations expressed their concerns regarding the attack on PG Shameem on January 31. Furthermore, they extensively deliberated on potential areas where assistance could be provided to further strengthen the criminal justice system in the Maldives.

Through existing collaborations with the US Department of Justice, the PGO highlighted ongoing assistance and the identification of areas requiring technical support for the Maldivian criminal justice system. Notably, technical experts from the US Department of Justice have already collaborated with Maldivian investigators and prosecutors on cases related to terrorism and terrorism financing. In addition, the Australian government is providing technical assistance to the Maldivian criminal justice system.

During the meetings, PG Shameem expressed gratitude to both governments for their support in enhancing the Maldives' criminal justice system. He also acknowledged the special assistance rendered by both nations in the fight against terrorism.
