Gov't pledges to settle fishermen's dues by March 5

Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources Ahmed Shiyam has announced that the government is committed to settling the outstanding payments owed to fishermen by March 5.

In a post on X, Minister Shiyam confirmed that the government will address the accumulated debt of USD18 million by the specified date, in addition to the USD16 million carried over from previous administrations. He also assured that the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company Limited (MIFCO) would disburse USD2 million for processed fish within the coming week.

Highlighting President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's personal involvement, Minister Shiyam emphasised the government's earnest attention to the concerns of fishermen, particularly those in Koodoo, Gaafu Alifu Atoll, where recent unrest has occurred. He also said that efforts to improve the situation are underway.

Furthermore, Minister Shiyam expressed openness to peaceful demonstrations as an essential aspect of democratic societies, acknowledging the legitimate grievances of fishermen from numerous boats who refrained from protesting. He urged protesting fishermen to restore normalcy, underscoring the necessity of a conducive environment for operations in Koodoo.
