The Maldives has contracted Pan Pacific Company Limited the project to develop Thinadhoo International Airport. The signing ceremony for the agreement occurred during a meeting between President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and the residents of Thinadhoo City.
The agreement was signed by Minister of Construction and Infrastructure Dr. Abdulla Muththalib and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Pan Pacific Company Limited Jirat Petnunthawong.
Speaking at the meeting, President Dr. Muizzu emphasised that the airport's design would be distinctive, highlighting plans for an overwater passenger terminal. He also expressed confidence that the airport would significantly enhance tourism and overall development within the atoll.
Meanwhile, Minister Muththalib confirmed that the project would commence imminently, underscoring that the airport's runway would be engineered to accommodate large aircraft. He outlined additional features to be developed, including a flight school, specialised flight facilities, a cargo terminal, and a fuel farm. Moreover, he revealed plans for a seaplane hub with a dedicated terminal, along with provisions for an air ambulance and decompression chamber.
Additionally, Minister Muththalib said that the project would be completed within the current term, heralding a transformative impact on tourism throughout the atoll.
Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll presently has three domestic airports, but lacks an international airport. The atoll currently boasts three operational resorts, comprising 113 beds, as well as eight guest houses with a total of 116 beds. President Dr. Muizzu envisions expanding tourist accommodation to accommodate at least 10,000 beds within Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll.
