Gov't aims to complete all water, sewerage systems by next year

Minister of Construction and Infrastructure Dr. Abdulla Muththalib has announced the task of establishing water supply and sewerage services across all islands in the Maldives will be completed by next year. He made the remarks while speaking at a meeting with the residents of Thinadhoo City during President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's ongoing tour in the southern atolls.

Speaking at the gathering, Minister Muththalib acknowledged that while projects to develop water supply and sewerage systems have commenced in numerous islands, progress has been hindered in certain areas, with some projects stalled altogether.

Additionally, Minister Muththalib disclosed that 102 islands currently lack adequate water supply and sewerage services, with 27 islands experiencing complete cessation of project activity. He, however, assured that the government has initiated collaborative efforts with contractors to resume work on three islands. He also noted the completion and testing of water supply and sewerage projects on six islands, with nine islands having concluded their trial periods and transitioning to full operational status under service providers.

Emphasising the administration's commitment under the leadership of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, Minister Muththalib underscored the prioritisation of facilitating universal access to water supply and sewerage services across all the islands in the Maldives.
