President plans to make Parliament citizen-focused

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has expressed his vision for transforming the Parliament of the Maldives into an institution that serves the welfare of the citizens, emphasising that the power to achieve it lies with the citizens themselves. He made the statement in response to a question while speaking at the 'Ahaa' public forum to address public queries on at Sultan Park.

Speaking at the forum, President Dr. Muizzu underscored that the Constitution of the Maldives grants significant authority to Parliament over the government. He criticised the current actions in Parliament, stating that they lack a valid foundation. He als oemphasised that it is crucial for the public to have a say in determining the establishment of a Parliament responsible for electing a leader during presidential elections, rather than allowing arbitrary actions without any foundation.

Additionally, President Dr. Muizzu highlighted the government's efforts in formulating housing legislation, with plans to present them to Parliament within 14 weeks of the transition of government. He also pledged to continue introducing bills aimed at furthering the agenda of the current Parliament.

Addressing challenges faced by women's development committees (WDCs) due to the constraints of the Decentralisation Act, President Dr. Muizzu expressed his intention to tackle the issue through parliamentary means. He also assured the public of his commitment to amending laws if given the opportunity by the citizens.
