Four by-elections to be held in March

The Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) has scheduled by-elections for four islands to be held in March.

The first by-election will occur in two islands simultaneously. It involves electing a female member for the Thakandhoo Island Council in Haa Alifu Atoll and a council member for Velidhoo Island Council in Noonu Atoll. Set for March 17, the by-election coincides with parliamentary elections, as decided by the electoral body.

Following this, another by-election in March will focus on selecting a female member for the Maafaru Island Council in Noonu Atoll and the president of Maduvvari Island Council in Meemu Atoll. It is scheduled to be held in March 30.

ECM has already concluded the nomination period for the Thakandhoo and Velidhoo by-elections, which ended on February 14. Meanwhile, nominations for the Maafaru and Maduvvari by-elections will be accepted until February 28. Approximately 4,080 eligible voters are expected to participate in the by-elections.
