Extra 700m to be added to Hanimaadhoo airport runway: President

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that the Hanimaadhoo International Airport (HIA) project is not big enough for future needs and plans to talk with the project's funders about adding 700 meters to the runway. He made the statement while speaking at a gathering with residents of Hanimaadhoo, Haa Dhaalu Atoll.

Speaking at the gathering, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu acknowledged the importance of the airport for the development of Haa Dhaalu Atoll. He expressed concerns about its current capacity and suitability for long-term demands. As such, he intends to discuss with the project's financing agency the expansion of the HIA runway by an additional 700 meters.

Additionally, President Dr. Muizzu emphasised the government's broader vision for Haa Alifu Atoll, highlighting the potential of Hanimaadhoo for population consolidation and service provision. He underscored the government's commitment to developing the tourism sector in the region, setting a target of 8,000 beds for tourism.

Furthermore, President Dr. Muizzu announced plans for a new hospital with modern facilities, prioritising healthcare for residents. Despite the loss of assistance from the Kuwait Fund for a previously planned hospital project, he assured residents that the government would proceed with constructing a new hospital. In addition, he pledged to improve the education system, allocate more resources, and implement housing projects on the island, signaling a comprehensive approach to long-term development.
