Gov't to establish a development zone encompassing four northern atolls

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced the establishment of a development zone encompassing the four northernmost atolls. The announcement was made during his address to the residents of Hanimaadhoo.

In his remarks, the President emphasised the significance of enhancing regional development to achieve sustainable progress. He revealed plans to establish eight development zones in the four northernmost and southernmost atolls, along with the transformation of seven central regions in the central Maldives into urban centers.

President Dr. Muizzu highlighted that the Administration's development policy would prioritize individual islands, even in the northernmost development zone, due to immigration. He specifically mentioned that Hanimaadhoo is among the prioritised islands for population consolidation and development policies, falling within the four northernmost atoll development zones.

Regarding the ongoing airport development work, the President stated that the airport needs to be developed more comprehensively. He disclosed his intention to renegotiate with the loan provider to accommodate a 700-meter runway extension.

The President also affirmed the Administration's commitment to constructing a state-of-the-art hospital on Hanimaadhoo, considering it a critical component of the broader regional development strategy.
