First phase of withdrawal of Indian troops begins

The Ministry of Defence has announced the commencement of the first phase of the withdrawal of Indian troops from Addu City, in accordance with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's commitment to replace military personnel at one of the three aviation platforms in the Maldives by March 10.

In a statement, the defence ministry confirmed the arrival of non-Indian military crews to replace the Indian troops stationed in Addu City. It further specified that the withdrawal of Indian troops from Addu is proceeding as scheduled.

Moreover, the statement mentioned plans to transport the Indian helicopter currently in operation in Addu back to India for maintenance. A replacement helicopter, carried by an Indian ship, is scheduled to arrive in the Maldives on February 28. Similar discussions are underway regarding the repatriation of Indian troops stationed in Kadhdhoo in Laamu Atoll and Hanimaadhoo in Haa Dhaalu Atoll, with efforts aimed at completing the process by May 10.

The ministry emphasised the government's commitment to enhancing defense and security relations with allied nations to safeguard the sovereignty and independence of the citizens of the Maldives.
