President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has affirmed his commitment to enhancing the salaries of civil service employees within councils, expressing his intent to pursue this through parliamentary means. He made the statemen during the "Raees ge Javaab" series, which facilitates direct public interaction with the President on diverse issues.
Azza Abdul Ghafoor, an employee at the Manadhoo Island Council in Noonu Atoll, voiced concerns to President Dr. Muizzu regarding the salaries and allowances of administrative employees at local councils. She also inquired about government policies addressing salary increments for educated personnel in such positions.
In response, President Dr. Muizzu acknowledged the parliamentary classification of local councils as low level and highlighted disagreements between the Civil Service Commission (CSC) and the Local Government Authority (LGA) due to legal issues. He emphasised the necessity of amending certain legal provisions, pledging to navigate the process through the Parliament.
Additionally, President Dr. Muizzu commended the dedication of civil servants within local councils, underscoring his belief in the imperative of adjusting their salaries. He expressed his aspiration to enhance pay for these employees as part of future salary structure revisions.
