President to extend uninhabited island allocation to 25 years

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans to extend the duration for allocating uninhabited islands to local councils for income generation from 10 to 25 years. He made the announcement while speaking at a gathering with the residents of Meedhoo, during his current visit to Raa Atoll.

Speaking at the gathering, President Dr. Muizzu outlined plans to allocate each council with an uninhabited island or lagoon for economic activities, even providing islands from other areas if necessary. He said that currently 26 islands have been earmarked for the allocation of uninhabited islands, with more to follow soon. He also revealed plans to extend the allocation period to 25 years, with potential for further extension to 50 years as permitted by law.

Additionally, President Dr. Muizzu discussed the government's plans for the development of Meedhoo, addressing concerns raised by the local council regarding land constraints. He mentioned the proposal for a land reclamation project, which was previously underfunded, pledging to increase the budget and initiate operations within the year.

Furthermore, President Dr. Muizzu reaffirmed commitments for the construction of an airport in the area, allocating an uninhabited island to Meedhoo, upgrading the island's hospital, and modernising its infrastructure. He emphasised that the efforts aim to enhance the social and economic landscape of Meedhoo and its surrounding region.
