Transport ministry warns of penalties for vessels navigating closed canals

The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation has warned of legal action against vessels traveling through the two canals closed for the Thilamale’ bridge project.

Despite multiple notifications prohibiting vessel travel through the Male’-Vilimale’ and Vilimale’-Gulhifalhu canals due to ongoing Thilamale’ bridge construction, the ministry stated it has observed a persistent disregard for these warnings, particularly among speedboats from various resorts.

Highlighting the heightened risk of dangerous accidents due to the ongoing works on the Male’–Thilafushi link project, the ministry announced its decision to enforce legal measures against vessels violating the prohibition.

The ministry noted the Local Transport Driving Licensing Regulations will be invoked, and in such instances, vessel licenses will be withheld as a consequence for non-compliance with the regulations.
