Attorney General Ahmed Usham has revealed that the total sum of settlements provided to various parties as compensation surpasses USD 65,000, and the process of settlements has been halted. These remarks were made during a press conference jointly held by the Ministry of Defence and the Attorney General's Office.
AG Usham clarified that the settlement committee established by the previous government has concluded its cases and is currently under investigation. He noted that upon assuming office, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu abolished the committee, and the President's Office has shared all relevant documents related to the committee's activities with the AG's office.
The AG disclosed that the committee, initiated by the preceding government, had granted finances and islands as compensation to 10 parties. He emphasised that the government had compensated individuals with amounts exceeding USD 65,000 and tangible goods. However, he also highlighted that the Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Tourism have been instructed to postpone decisions regarding compensation determined by the previous administration's committee.
Furthermore, AG Usham stated that ongoing investigations are analyzing how the settlement committee resolved the cases, and some cases have been submitted to the court with hearings conducted. He affirmed that the settlement committee had successfully handled legal matters, preventing potential victories for plaintiffs against the government. Additionally, he noted that the Auditor General's Office has provided recommendations in some cases.
