Managing Director of Maldives Post Limited Ahmed Shafeeq has announced that arrangements are being made to bring goods for pilgrims performing Hajj and Umrah through the postal service in collaboration with Saudi Post, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Addressing the media during a meeting organised by the Ministry of Cities, Local Government, and Public Work for the Week-14 initiative, Shafeeq acknowledged the common problem faced by pilgrims of heavy luggage when returning from Hajj and Umrah trips. He revealed that efforts are being made to establish a system to bring luggage and other goods weighing a maximum of 30kg for a small fee through Saudi Post.
Shafeeq mentioned that administrative work for this initiative is currently underway, and arrangements are being made to ensure that the fees charged per kg for goods brought through the post are lower than commercial rates. The locations for post service centers are being determined, and facilities will be established in places close to where most Maldivians stay during their pilgrimage trips.
Further, he assured that detailed information about the post service center locations will be provided once they are decided. He emphasised that he is working to expedite the arrangement of this system, and information will be communicated to pilgrims through relevant groups once everything is in order. The move is aimed at providing a convenient solution for the increasing number of people going to perform Umrah from the Maldives.
